Today students in science were met with a re-vamp of a favorite science lab. In groups of 3, they chose a beak (toothpick, clothes pin, or scissors) and over the course of 4 rounds, they attempted to feast on different plates of food. This evening students will begin to reflect on the processes that have shaped beaks and other features of living things. This week is all about adaptations, artificial selection and natural selection. For homework, students should finish their reflection questions to prepare for tomorrow's classwork.
In math, students solved area and perimeter puzzles by filling in homemade tangram puzzles and calculating the area and perimeter of these irregular shapes. Since the area of the pieces closely relate to one another (most pieces are exactly half the size of another larger piece), the students began to see triangles as half the area of a rectangle. This will help us segue into studying the area of other polygons like triangles, parallelograms, and those with many more sides. Their homework tonight is to complete unfinished IXL skills to make sure they are prepared for a formative assessment tomorrow.
