The past two days have been very active for the hands and minds of these 6th grade students. Yesterday, students spent part of their Math class figuring out how much to charge for fractions OF fractional parts of a brownie pan, then in Science we participated in a global movement called "Hour of Code", where students spent an entire class period learning the basics of programming, and even designing the beginnings of their first video game - ask them about it, it was a ton of fun and they'll certainly be better off knowing how to speak this language in the future!

Today, students began math class with a new Kapla Block challenge - to build a ramp that could cause a ping pong ball to change directions 180º. They spent the rest of class creating quick drawings or examples of repeated addition to explain multiplication problems that involved whole numbers, mixed numbers, and fractions. They're becoming very good at explaining their reasoning, listening to other strategies, and seeing problems from many angles. All good things! In Science, students sorted cards with examples of organisms, populations, communities, abiotic factors, and ecosystems into categories and gave their reasoning for why they sorted them in that particular way. We'll take these concepts further in the next few weeks as we closely examine how energy flows through the food webs of different ecosystems.

Math homework is to finish the 4 pages of practice with mixed numbers and improper fractions, and Science students who did not finish their Sorting Charts in class should finish them for homework.
